Please be very careful who you are thumbing up and reviewing. There is a new flock of stumblers here recently that stumble for profit. In other words they get paid for blogging certain sites. There is a discernible pattern to their behavior.
1. They always contact you with nice compliments about your site/blog/profile, but don't necessarily give you a review.
2. They become a fan of your site.
3. If you don't reciprocate within a few days, they contact you again by pm, asking for you to befriend them.
4. Their page will show several posts from a certain website, ie onlineweblibrary.com [onlineweblibrary.com] there may be others, but this is one that stands out to me.
5. If you tell them that you recognize what they are doing, they will always protest that they are just suggesting interesting sites for stumblers to see. This is not true. They get paid for recommending these sites and by doing so, they circumvent the responsibility of paying for advertising like the legitimate advertisers do here on Stumbleupon.
6. If we don't stop this practice, they will fill the stumble rotation with their ads.
Please be alert and wary of anyone who comes asking you for a thumbs up or a review of their page. First of all, that's not how Stumbleupon is supposed to work. You should receive legitimate thumbs of approval and reviews because of your merit, not as a return favor to anyone. Take a good look at their page. If you see several of their posts are from the same website, don't befriend them. You'll be setting yourself up to receive more and more of these kinds of sites that pay people to post them. By thumbing these people up and befriending them, you will be giving them a sense of legitimacy that they don't deserve. They're here for money, not community! |

I've been flagging and I've had a lot of help from my friend Bob. He gets a big charge outta flagging these jerks. If you get a chance stop by and say "thank you" for all his great work!

Sponsor | | carouselle | Apr 15, 7:26am | Lately, I've been seeing more and more of the spammer's sites coming up when I stumble. Haven't had any sent by my "friends" yet, but they're still there. I find this very disturbing. I've begun to get the feel for their sites. They have a certain look about them. The quality of the design is less than most websites we see in rotation. If I get the feeling a site has been "discovered" or put into the stumble rotation by a spammer, I always check the pages of the one who "discovered" it. If they do indeed prove to be a spammer, I always go to the tools button on the toolbar and report it as such to SU. The more of these sites that are allowed in the stumble rotation, the more the quality of stumbles goes down. Be alert when you stumble. If you happen on a site that doesn't seem quite right in some way, investigate it. See who discovered it. If the discoverer says "Someone," then I check out the people who've given it a thumbs up or reviewed it. If many of them are spammers, then I thumb it down and report it. We really need to work together to stop these people from ruining the good thing we've got going here!
